Happy Foundation Day guys! yes it’s a Western Australia (WA) thing. The first Monday of June is a public holiday, commemorating the colonisation of WA (by the Brit’s) in 1829. That’s the thing with a young country; all its key dates are in the recent past thus plenty of excuses to declare public holidays. To find out the date of England’s equivalent ‘Foundation Day’ you’d probably need to use carbon dating… hence why we don’t celebrate one.
This being the case, WA doesn’t celebrate the Queen’s Official Birthday Holiday but not wanting to miss out on another opportunity for a public holiday, they tactically commemorate it in Sept/Oct.
So what do these guys do on this public holiday… shopping and watching Ozzie Rules Football it would seem. Yep I was working today (though most shops/businesses are closed) and it was soo busy. At one point I took a boot to the face!... because I was too enthusiastic in unpacking one box and the knee high wedge boots shot out and caught me square on the jaw. And I experienced a weird event after work… there were other people on the streets when I was walking home!!! Seriously I rarely cross paths with other humans on my walk to/from my job, Australian’s just don’t walk. The reason for this sudden change of events was because an Western Australia Football League (WAFL) game had just finished at the stadium located between work and home, thus people were leaving and it appeared some of them walked to the game (they do know what their hind limbs are meant for after all). Case closed.
It’s officially winter in Australia (as of 1st June), so in the past 12 months I’ve had 2 summers, 2 autumns and 2 winters… confusing hey. True the ‘wintery day’ today was 24’C so it’s not really the same seasonal weather… so one will not be expecting snow this winter. Probably a good thing becuase rain is enough to cause chaos on the roads here (it's common knowledge that people in Perth can't cope with driving in the rain), i dread to think what snow would cause!
Because this is obviously confusing my British senses, maybe I can use it as an excuse for the fashion faux pas I committed the other day… wearing socks with sandals (something me and my sibling have always balked at our dad for doing). But actually it was more down to laziness I guess. I mean you have to wear socks inside (because it’s cool indoors) and I just wanted to pop to the local shops so the effort of putting ones shoes was just too much and removing the socks likewise, so the simplest option was the aforementioned heinous fashion crime. I’m getting way too laid back… but I have been Australian-ised for over 5 months now.
Hope you all (those that are in the UK) are still enjoying your lovely four day bank holiday weekend. And those not in the UK I hope the start of your working week is going well.
So to end on a more climatially appropiate note, Aloha!
socks and sandals, that is actually disgraceful. sort it out
