Caution: hot

No kidding. When I went outside this morning at 8.30 the heat was already intense and made me think that the jeans I decided to wear will now be put away until April (when the weather apparently starts to cool).

So on my first full day in Perth on a working-holiday visa I open a bank account (for the work aspect) then buy a football and longboard (for the holiday). Thus I feel that I have maintained the balance that my visa states. Wandering through the local mall is always a perfect opportunity to people watch and it was just a sea of sunglasses/shorts/t-shirts/dresses, yet unlike the British who would don this attire at the faintest glimpse of the sun, these people are justified in owning these clothes.

So getting into the ozzie spirit, I wanted to get into surfing as soon as I had improved my swimming technique (yes, I admit there is a sport I am not that good at, though in my defence I have never been overly interested in water except for drinking it), however there is a Great White Shark about the area and I have no interest in getting into a swimming race, as it has already got the better of 4 people.

Thus when Hannah (a daughter of the family I am staying with) said she would like me to teach her longboarding (I used to skateboard as a teenager), I needed little encouragement in joining in and getting my own board. Hannah is 21, married and her husband (Leo) bought her a board for Christmas since she announced recently that she would like to learn... not your normal scenario admittedly but she is getting into the swing (or ride) of it quickly, and I am more than happy to be involved. Saying that, the heat means you've already worked up a sweat before you step onto the board, so the convenient shower placed on the path (by the ocean) where we were cruising was a perfect way to cool down (though the sun dries you off quickly too).

my ride

Anticipating a battle this weekend... of the dance variety, not that I've angered the locals already. Need to brush up on my moves meantime. Adios.
